It is difficult to imagine the life of modern apartment complexes without house chats, however, it is important to remember that scammers have managed to infiltrate them. This was discussed in a conversation with «360» by housing and communal services expert and public figure Dmitry Bondar.

According to him, sometimes criminals, posing as neighbors, offer to urgently buy a parking space before someone else takes it. After the victim transfers the money, they find out that there are no paid parking lots in their residential complex at all. Another scheme involves scammers targeting chats in new residential complexes, where many residents are renovating, and they offer to sell excess construction materials, furniture, or household appliances in advance.

Some scammers use the theme of charity, playing on people’s good feelings. For example, they may claim to be collecting money for the treatment of sick children, homeless animals, or lonely pensioners. Fake posts often come with emotional photos and loud appeals.

In addition, scammers sometimes come forward with offers for repairs, cleaning, or appliance installation. One «neighbor» asks for a recommendation for a handyman, and then his accomplice appears and recommends a particular specialist with enthusiastic endorsements. The goal is still to receive a prepayment for nonexistent services.

«Never rush into making decisions, especially when it comes to money. Always insist on a face-to-face meeting before any transactions. Verify documents confirming ownership rights to the objects being sold or rented,» Bondar said, adding that if you are asked to participate in charity collections, do not hesitate to request additional information and documents. It is also important to be extremely cautious with offers that require an immediate response — scammers try to create a sense of urgency to prevent the victim from having time to think.

The expert noted that in some cases, chat administrators may be held responsible, risking becoming accomplices of the criminals.

«House chats are an excellent tool for building a healthy neighborhood community. Do not refuse to use them out of fear of falling victim to scammers. Instead, develop critical thinking, be vigilant, and take care of each other,» he concluded, advising administrators to report any suspicious messages in the chats.

Earlier, information security specialist Dmitry Artimovich revealed whether it is worth fearing revenge from phone scammers.
